The Dead North
On the Northernmost reach of the Renu Empire, The North Wardens guard the land from the horrors of the Dead North. The Wardens spend most of their time training and beating back offenses by the vile residents of the Dead North. However, they occasionally must make incursions into the Dead North to scout the region, lend protection to the few strongholds of safety in the land, and rout areas of particular danger. The Northern border of Renu is the Dakeigis Range, which shields Renu wherever the North Wardens cannot. Dotted throughout this range are several small strongholds, but the main stronghold is in the Ivory Fortress at Warden Pass.
But what exactly do you defend against? Ravenous hordes of cannibalistic undead, for one. However, savage giants, mammoths, and twisted but living creatures also populate this horrid land. The Dead Land is known to be curse, and all effects that draw from positive energy are slightly dampened and wounds inflected on a body refuse to naturally heal.
The North Wardens is primarily populated by zealous paladins, rangers, and other warriors. Spellcasters, especially those of the divine variety, and valued extremely heavily, due to the necessary functions they perform, their great power, and their relative rarity.
The Warden Marshal (as well as the Marshal of each military branch/organization) reports directly to High Constable of Renu, who reports directly to the Emperor. The Warden Marshal is the is in direct charge of all the machinations of the North Wardens. Through many aspects rely on tradition, different Warden Marshals hold different approaches to the style that they defend the land. The Empire cares not what rules and customs the current Warden Marshal enforces, so long as he is efficiently defending the Empire from the Dead North.
The Warden Marshal has several high ranking officers of his choosing. One of you will be the Warden Marshal. The rest will hold positions that you determine through your backstory, such as High Advisor, Watch Captain, Head Ranger (not necessarily an actual Ranger, mind you) or whatever position you want to make up that you feel should exist. Alternatively you might just be an exceptionally skilled soldier who has not advanced to higher ranks due to impertinence or a lack of desire to be thrust in a position of leadership. Effectively, your characters are the head players in the zone, instead of reporting to some big NPC for quests or orders, you are the one in charge, and people report to YOU.
The Frost Men
The “savages” of the Dead North often call themselves the Frost Men. What brings such people to try to live in the Dead North outside of the bastions is beyond most. Frost Men live in tribes, mostly nomadic, but some build small settlements. Every one of them is a mighty warrior or mage, and can often be found living alongside giants or even dragons for mutual survival. Frost Men dash across the fields of the Dead North riding atop their mounts, usually winter wolves. Occasionally, Frost men decide they wish to raid Renu, and break or sneak through undefended border areas to pillage northern Renu villages. These are generally beaten back somewhat easily, but enough are successful, or sometimes their states are dire enough to continue to have them decide to perform raids. No intelligent marshal has, however, encouraged extermination of the Frost Men, despite the fact that Frost Men and Wardens (particularily ones on patrol) are frequently at odds. This is for several reasons. First of all, not all Frost Men villages are belligerent, some may even be a handy place of shelter in exchange for valuables (though almost never for free. Food, Clothing, and Arms are the most valued of items to be offered for sanctuary.) Second of all, as living creatures, Frost men are truly the first line of defense against the dead of the dead north, they combat the wights and daemons more than Wardens, most like!
